A hot summer day set Chicago ablaze in 1919. Seventeen-year-old Eugene Williams crossed an invisible line in Lake Michigan that divided the segregated shores, and he was killed by a group of white beachgoers. His death sparked a deadly 13-day riot. The fighting spread throughout the city, then throughout the country in what became known as the Red Summer. In Chicago, 38 people died, more than 500 were injured, and thousands were left homeless.
The ignition of the Red Summer proved that racism and prejudice had always existed in the north; it was just quieter here. And it’s a pervasive silence that’s lingered over a century – the scars of the Red Summer are still present, open and bleeding in the underlying systems of inequity today.
Dr. Eve L. Ewing, Chicago-based sociologist and poet, explored the Red Summer and expanded on its lasting impact in her second collection of poems, titled 1919. The book was recently adapted for the stage by J. Nicole Brooks and will make its world premiere at the Steppenwolf Theater this October.
Join WBEZ’s Sasha-Ann Simons for a reflective conversation about Chicago’s Red Summer with Dr. Ewing on October 12th at 7pm at the Logan Center.

Tatsu Aoki's ensemble, The MIYUMI Project, is one of the longest-standing amalgams of Chicago's avant-garde jazz and Japanese traditional music. Drawing from aesthetics rooted in the Japanese tradition and Japanese taiko drumming permeate the laboratory of sound where he explores the nexus of cultures: Asian and American; Japanese and African; past and present. The improvised compositions provide a conceptual framework for each band member to interpret, which in turn coalesce and transform into a vast contemporary expanse of musical immersion for the audience. Over the past two decades, each successive grouping of Miyumi Project musicians has contributed to the unique blending of modern application with a traditional sensibility. The final result is a continuous evolution of a "live and raw" musical happening.
In The Third Reconstruction, distinguished historian Peniel E. Joseph offers a powerful and personal new interpretation of recent history. The racial reckoning that unfolded in 2020, he argues, marked the climax of a Third Reconstruction: a new struggle for citizenship and dignity for Black Americans, just as momentous as the movements that arose after the Civil War and during the civil rights era. Joseph draws revealing connections and insights across centuries as he traces this Third Reconstruction from the election of Barack Obama to the rise of Black Lives Matter to the failed assault on the Capitol.
America’s first and second Reconstructions fell tragically short of their grand aims. Our Third Reconstruction offers a new chance to achieve Black dignity and citizenship at last—an opportunity to choose hope over fear.
Join us for a limited-capacity in-person book launch event and celebration with Peniel E. Joseph in conversation with Jesse Jackson Jr. about America's struggle for racial justice in the twenty-first century.
Join NAMI South Suburbs of Chicago for a event that is designed to address stigma around mental health in the Black/AA community.
For too long, lack of information and stigma about mental health issues have been barriers that prevent the underrepresented Black/African American and Latinx communities from getting the mental health support they need for mental wellness. As a NAMI National launch partner, NAMI Illinois is providing resources, preparing facilitators, and gathering feedback to help NAMI local affiliates and community-based organizations to provide mental health awareness, support, education, and resources to these underserved communities.
To address these needs, NAMI Illinois has launched two sister programs – Sharing Hope (Led by and exclusively for Black / African American community) and Compartiendo Esperanza (Led by and exclusively for Latinx community)
Join us for an evening with photographer Carell Augustus as he presents and discusses his new book Black Hollywood: Reimagining Iconic Movie Moments, a visionary photography book that brings together the best of classic Hollywood with today's iconic Black entertainers for an immersive experience unlike anything you've ever seen before. Black Hollywood features a foreword by Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker and an afterword by beloved entertainer Niecy Nash. Augustus is joined in conversation by reporter and lecturer Arionne Nettles.
This is an in-person program at the American Writers Museum. This program will also be livestreamed, and you can register for the link to the online broadcast here. Tickets for this program can be used at a later date for general admission to the Museum.
This program is presented in conjunction with our special exhibit Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writers on Justice. Explore the exhibit at the American Writers Museum beginning September 22, 2022.
Nobuntu, the female a cappella quintet from Zimbabwe, has drawn international acclaim, for its inventive performances that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. The ensemble’s concerts are performed with pure voices, augmented by minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments such as the Mbira (thumb piano) and organic, authentic dance movements. Nobuntu was nominated for Best Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards in London in 2015 and are currently a two-time winner for the Best Imbube Group at the Bulawayo Arts Awards 2017 and 2019.
In the last few seasons, the quintet has performed at festivals and concert halls in Italy, Austria, Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic and throughout the African continent. The ensemble was a huge critical success at “Trans-Vocal” in Frankfurt and “Voice Mania” in Vienna. Their first tour to Canada, in 2016, included performances in Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Victoria. The word Nobuntu is an African concept that values humbleness, love, unity and family from a woman’s perspective.
The ensemble represents a new generation of young African women singers who celebrate and preserve their culture, beauty, and heritage through art. The ensemble’s mission is the belief that music can be an important vehicle for change, one that transcends racial, tribal, religious, gender, and economic boundaries. Back at home, Nobuntu holds a number of community initiatives, one of which is The Nobuntu Pad Bank where they gather sanitary pads for young women in the arts in underprivileged communities. Nobuntu has released three recordings- Thina in 2013, Ekhaya in 2016 and Obabes beMbube in 2018. The group has made dozens of television and radio appearances throughout Africa and Europe promoting these recordings and the culture of their homeland.
I’m from Long Island, NY (pronounced “Lawwwng EYE-lind, New Yawk”). I was raised on gospel music. I played sax thru high school. I studied Vocal Jazz Performance in college and I’m obsessed with gowns, books, candles and Sarah Vaughan…no yoga… no Sarah… no yoga. Oh, I also have A.D.D. That’s it in a nutshell.
It’s been about 13 years in the music biz. I’ve sang around the world a few times, released over 100 songs and collaborated with everyone from Jay Z to George Duke, Natalie Cole to Nas and John Legend to Drake. I’ve shared the mic with legends like Patty Labelle and Stevie Wonder and I’ve hit the stage with Rick Ross, Wale, Kirk Franklin, The Ojay’s and Robert Glasper amongst others. I’m blessed. I have a curious set of giftings. It doesn’t quite fit into any box. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Being diverse allows me to love so many different kinds of people and really, love is the point of it all.
